This is a great book for what it is.It isn't intended to solve poverty or to deal with broad structural issues, social policy, or any of that.It is a framework for middle class people who serve the poor to understand the often perplexing behavior of those they serve. It doesn't apply to many. But, it is dead-on for many others.In the end, it comes down to rules and priorities for survival in one class differ from another. It compares and contrasts these rules. Since the author believes school is a middle class environment, she offers suggestions for helping lower class students adapt to this change.There is a lot to make those who seek offense become offended.Take it as useful insight into a single facet of poverty, cringe a little as you read the example dialogs, and you will gain a better understanding.Don't buy any of her other books. She just copies and pastes from this one.
Overgeneralizations of culture and poverty. I worry this requiered reading based on very poor research such as limited data sampling is used to for counseling programs. Any kid out of a a 4 year entering the field of counseling will eat this book as truth. “Poor people are broken because of poverty and are more likely to watch loud TV.†It has a few interesting tidbits but again, read this stuff skeptically. If this is a required reading, challenge your professor with questions on generalizations. If you’re in a field of counseling, you have to be cautious about generalizing your clients into boxes and stereotypes.
I work in a school system that absolutely is described in this book. Over the years, the book has really helped me to understand my students more and to deal better with those in the community. So glad it was shared with me, once upon a time, and so glad I have passed the book on.
Definitely enlightening on how much of a role our economic class plays in our thinking and biases. Also has nice chart comparisons.
